Located at 910 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101, the USS Midway Museum traces the history of naval aviation. You can view the ship, which is the largest aircraft carrier in the United States, or you can take a trip on a jet boat through the bay. It is also home to a collection of aircraft, including 29 restored military aircraft.
While on board, you will get a bird’s eye view of the San Diego Bay, and will be able to explore the ship’s flight deck and pilot ready rooms. In addition, you’ll have the chance to take a peek at the aircraft carriers’ command information center, which includes various instruments used in aircraft carriers. You’ll also get a chance to see the ship’s galley, cockpit, hospital, and sleeping quarters. The ship’s mascot is an uncomplicated giant statue of an Unconditional Surrender.
If you’re looking for something a little more interactive, the Midway Air Museum has more than 30 restored World War II-era aircraft on display, including the Titan II SLV Missile. It also boasts one of the largest 3D theaters in Oregon. The museum is closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
You can also experience life on board the Midway through an audiotour. The audiotour is narrated by Midway sailors, and re-creates life on the ship when it was in use. Visitors can also listen to a pilot explain the history of a flight, or see the ship’s galley and captain’s cabin. The museum’s award-winning virtual reality experience is also available.
Another must-see is the Maritime Museum of San Diego, which features one of the world’s most extensive collections of historic ships. The Star of India, the oldest active ship in the world, is located here, as are the world’s first ship-shaped ship, the Star of India, and a number of other impressive exhibits. The Maritime Museum also offers docent-led museum tours, as well as On the Water adventures that let visitors explore San Diego Bay by kayak, sea-lion kayak, or on a vintage wooden roller coaster. Other highlights include an on-board jail, flight control tower, and a range of movie screenings.
The USS Midway Museum is one of the largest museums in the United States, and the largest naval aircraft carrier museum in the world. This is because the museum is housed on the massive aircraft carrier Midway, which is permanently anchored in San Diego Bay. In addition, the museum has a museum store, a cafe with toy airplanes, and a gift shop. It is also home to several flight simulators, including a simulator for the Boeing 707, the world’s largest passenger airliner. If you have a child in tow, be sure to check out the Digital Airplane Studio, where they can color their very own airplane. The museum also features a window shop, with packaging for many of the same items that would have been found in a small town during the period the ship was in service.
